A gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) is a rare type of cancer that forms in the digestive system. These tumours can develop anywhere along the digestive tract, but most commonly occur in the stomach or small intestine.
Signs and Symptoms of GIST
Many people with GIST don’t experience any symptoms, especially in the early stages of the disease. However, some possible signs and symptoms of GIST include:
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Bleeding in the stool (blood may be bright red or dark)
- Vomiting blood
- Feeling full or bloated after eating
- Weight loss
Treatment of GIST
The most common treatment for GIST is surgery to remove the tumour. In some cases, other treatments, such as targeted therapy medications, may be used to shrink the tumour or prevent it from coming back after surgery
Important to note: If you are experiencing any of the signs or symptoms of GIST, please see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the chances of a successful outcome.
