Wilms Tumor, also known as Nephroblastoma, is the
most common type of kidney cancer in children.
It accounts for around 90% of
all childhood kidney tumors . It typically affects young children, with most
cases being diagnosed before the age of 5. It’s slightly more common in girls
than boys.
Causes: The exact cause of Wilms tumor is
unknown, but it’s believed to be caused by changes in certain genes during
fetal development.
Symptoms: A painless lump in the belly (abdomen)
is the most common symptom. Other symptoms may include blood in the urine, high
blood pressure, fever, abdominal pain, and nausea or vomiting.
Diagnosis: Doctors may use tests such as
ultrasound, CT scan, MRI scan, and blood and urine tests to diagnose Wilms
tumor.
Treatment : Surgery is the main treatment for
Wilms tumor. Depending on the stage and other factors, treatment may also
include chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Prognosis : The prognosis for Wilms tumor is
generally good, with a five-year survival rate of over 80%.
